Every Pakistani actor wants to work in Bollywood
Javed Sheikh, a notable Pakistani actor, who have worked in many famous drama serials in Pakistan and has been recently working in Indian films now has said that “Every Pakistani actor wants to work in India” in an interview to The Hindu.
In an interview, actor said that he has been working in Hindi films for quite some time now and that is what brings me to India. Javed Sheikh is working with Imtiaz Ali on his fil “Tamasha”.
I have a good role in the film and am playing Ranbir Kapoor’s father, Javed said.
On asking, which wether you prefer Lollywood or Bollywood, Javed Sheikh said that he has been doing films for over three decades now, I prefer working in films with good subjects. For me there is no difference, but if you want me to say Bollywood, I will say yes and the reason is that it is a very big industry, more advanced, more professional having more opportunities, big thinking and off course big money. I enjoy working here.
On Pakistan cinema revival, he said that the film industry in Pakistan was in a very bad shape some years back. In the ’70s and 80s we made very good films and then our industry did not upgrade itself with the passage of time and the result was that it almost finished. But now a new industry has come up in Karachi with new directors, new writers, new actors and new thoughts and as a result of which we have started making good films. Actually it all started with my film “Yeh Dil Aapka Hua”. It started when a friend of mine asked me to make a film with an Indian touch. For us it was a costly film. We recorded the music of the film in India with Indian singers like Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurty, Sonu Nigam and Kumar Sanu. We also hired Saroj Khan as the choreographer for our film and this was Pakistan’s first Dolby Digital film. It took me two years to complete. After the film was completed there were no takers for it as it was a very costly film. So I opened my own distribution office. At that time the then president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf in order to give a boost to the industry abolished the tax on the sale of the tickets which was about 35 per cent of the Rs.50 ticket. Being a costly film it was released in Dolby digital theatres.
Moreover, there was not a single multiplex in Pakistan at that time. Our film was released in 17 theatres and I decided to charge one hundred rupees for the ticket. The film was a hit and went on to become a trendsetter. In those days making a film would cost about a crore of rupees but ours cost five crore and we did a business of twelve and a half crore rupees in about a year’s time.
I have been doing television shows in Pakistan for nearly four decades. I have been getting offers from Indian channels also which I have refused and the reason behind is that they are very lengthy, they go on and on for years and I do not have that much time. One show “Meri Jaan Hai” Tu is now being shown in India on Zindagi channel. I am playing the father of the male lead.

Aik Pal Episode 1 - Hum TV Dramas
Aik Pal Episode 1
The drama shows a contrast between the lives of two girls, Bareera (Arij Fatyma)and Noor Fatima (Sumbhul Iqbal) . Noor Fatima is the poor village girl who is dependent on her taaya for her education and he isn’t allowing her to study. Plus he has captured her father’s land, which could have been her financial help. Her views on money are, “Wealth ka matlab, dunya ki sab se taaqat-war cheez, jis se ham ilm bhi khareed sakte hain.”
On the other hand, Bareera has everything in life. Money, good looks and people who love her. Her intro as a modern, care free and adventurous girl was prolonged and unconvincing. Why would two ladies walking out of a shopping mall have mercy on a girl (Bareera) who is acting like a beggar when she doesn’t even look like one?
Plus it was surprising to see a well off girl like Bareera acting so weird. The way she gobbled up the burger was like she hadn’t eaten for days. Khair, she will pay for this later as was evident from the last scene of the episode. Oops!
What goes wrong with these lesson-based dramas is a)they are too preachy and b) too cliched. Up till now, Aik Pal isn’t any of the either. We have cliched characters but there is a limit to the cliches. Bareera’s family consists of a caring and a mature religious sister (Beena) and a loving father who believes in giving his daughter some space. Compared to the regular disappointed fathers and the annoying sisters, these two are a treat to watch.
The next character is Musaf Ameer Ali (Affan Waheed) who is a simple, kind and caring person. He belongs to a village and believes that doing anything good for his village folk does not count as a favour. He has set up a school for the kids of his village.
Bechara Mushaf! He has to live in the same hostel room as Umair (Danish Taimoor) who is a rich, carefree playboy and hates his parents. This is why he stays at the hostel away from his parents. He is well prepared for his roommate and when he catches Musaf sleeping in his room, he throws water at the poor guy. Jo meri territory mein ayega, uske sath yahi hoga!
To his surprise, Musaf walks away without a fight and doesn’t even bring this up until the next morning when Umair greets him. Musaf’s reply to Umair’s “Good morning” was “Assalam-o-Alaikum” and that scene brought a smile to my face.
Things work in Noor Fatima’s favour for now and taaya ji decides to let her go to the city for MBA. Kama kar apni maa aur bhai ko sambhale gi, yahan rahi tou zameenon ka hisaab maang le gi. Noor’s taaya ka beta (Ali Safina) is interested in her and is the main obstacle in her path right now.
Overall, I enjoyed watching the drama. This is a good start for a play I wasn’t expecting a lot from. The characters are well-etched and the pace is perfect. Hopefully it will stay the same. The writer Sarwat Nazeer and director Siraj-ul-Haq have done a wonderful job. It will be interesting to see these four youngsters enroll in the same university. Let’s see what happens from now on.
